For the Left Democratic Front Government which assumed office in May 2006. Education is a tool for social progress. It cannot be viewed as an end in itself. The Government cannot promote a throwback to diehard attitudes of obscurantism and to many stagnant concepts. Society has to change positively as the world changes and adapts itself. Education must aim at the comprehensive development of the new generation. It must help nation building at all layers. The 1957 EMS Government’s Education Bill, the 1987 Nayanar Government’s Total Literacy Campaign, the child friendly and activity – oriented curriculum of 1996 were all historical signposts of this perception about education.

Brighter General Education
During the last years of the previous Government, general education was in a murky situation with the leakage S.S.L.C. question papers and other unhealthy tendencies. The present government could plug all loopholes in the system and the examinations could be held in a free and fair manner. In 2008, the question papers were kept in safe locker of nearest nationalized bank or treasury. S.S.L.C. pass percentage has shown considerable improvement in the year 2007 as compared to the previous years.

A working programe has been prepared jointly to coordinate works in directorates of General Education, Higher Secondary, Vocational Higher Secondary, SCERT, SIET, CERMAT, district block/grama panchayats.

IT @ School and One Laptop for One School

 

IT@School and One Laptop for One School projects were inaugurated by Education Miniminister at at the SCERT premises, Thiruvananthapuram on February 10, 2009. State recrreceived assistance from the Centre for IT infrastructure development for 1016 schools.

As As part of extending this project in other schools an assistance of Rs. 50 crore will be utilised this this year. By installing Internet facility LCD projector and accessories in Government schools thethey would be made centres having technological excellence.

Edusat uplink Station

Inauguration of Edusat uplink station and victor studio was conducted by ISRO Chairman G. Madhavan Nair on the occasion. New technologies would be utilised for improving the activities of Edusat, he said.

 

Events

The Kerala Public Education Department will completely switch over to free software from the next academic year to become the first Indian State to end dependence on licensed software in a Government wing.

 

A  meeting of the curriculum committee for Higher Secondary Studies decided to extend use of free software for studies in plus-one and plus-two classes as well. Free software is already in use for IT-related studies up to the 10th standard.

 

IT@school initiative, the nodal agency for the IT studies and e-Governance programmes, would provide the technical assistance to the switch over.
